Westwood Apartment Fire Kills One

Thursday, December 3, 2020

WESTWOOD - Despite the swift response of firefighters, an apartment was damaged by flames early Thursday morning, and sadly took the life of one man.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified by the 9-1-1 call at 1:57 AM on December 3, 2020, to respond to a structure fire at 1749 South Kelton Avenue, where firefighters arrived quickly to find a two-story garden-style apartment building with fire to the rear of the second floor.

A bold offensive attack was rapidly initiated as LAFD personnel charged in with hose lines through excessive storage conditions to prevent the fire from extending to other units. As crews applied water to the flames, holding the fire to the unit of origin, two patients were found. Sadly, one man was beyond medical help, while another patient was rushed to the hospital in grave condition.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section and LAPD. The LA County Coroner / Medical Examiner's Office will handle cause of death determination and confirmation of the identity of the individual.
