The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to assist multiple persons injured following reports of gunfire at a harbor area municipal park on Sunday afternoon.

The LAFD was summoned at 3:51 PM on July 24, 2022, by the first of several 9-1-1 calls, requesting aid for several persons believed struck by gunfire in and near a parking lot and adjacent baseball field at Peck Park, 560 North Western Avenue in San Pedro.

According to witnesses, an informal gathering of local automotive enthusiasts was taking place in the parking lot, with a baseball game nearby, when repetitive gunfire erupted.

With initial reports to 9-1-1 conveying a dynamic "active shooter" scenario at the crowded park, with one or more assailants still on site, first arriving Police and Fire Department responders established a tactical posture and unified command to rapidly assess the large scene, identify and actively neutralize threats, and prepare for emergency casualty collection, triage, treatment and transportation of patients under coordinated force protection.

Assuring the perimeter of the large park and key zones within were systematically secured and safe for both bystander egress and patient care took the well coordinated effort of Los Angeles Police Department Officers supported by 67 LAFD personnel, including specially trained Tactical Emergency Medical Support Unit Paramedics. 

With casualty collection underway and 17 LAFD ambulances at or approaching the scene, Incident Commanders established contact with regional medical control to assure hospitals were informed and prepared for victims, as the situation continued to unfold.

Although the concern of an active shooter thankfully proved unfounded, the joint LAPD/LAFD Rescue Task Forces swiftly deployed across the park proved effective in locating, triaging, treating and transferring seven adults with gunshot injuries to a casualty collection point. Those patients, ranging from 23 to 54 years of age, received ongoing trauma care from LAFD Paramedics during prompt ambulance transport to hospitals across the region.

Sadly, the two most critically injured victims succumbed to their injuries after arriving at the hospital. The five other patients were reported to be receiving ongoing medical care.

The identity of the deceased, to include the specific cause, time and manner of their deaths, will be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
