An afternoon home explosion significantly damaged a one-story home and injured one occupant.

The Los Angeles Fire Department received a 9-1-1 call at 12:36 PM on October 11, 2018, reporting an explosion at a Boyle Heights residence located on the 1100 block of South Lorena Street.  Firefighters quickly arrived to find a one-story home with several walls and the roof partially blown out.  A 65 year-old man was found outside the front door and paramedics rendered immediate medical aid and transported him to a local trauma center in critical condition.

The home had a small amount of residual fire which was rapidly extinguished while a swift search was completed to find additional occupants.  Fortunately, two dogs were rescued from the home and there were no additional injuries.

LAFD specialists including Hazardous Materials Technicians and Urban Search and Rescue Technicians worked with the Department of Building and Safety to determine the home’s structural integrity.

The cause of the explosion remains under active investigation by the Arson/ Counter-Terrorism Section.
