WATTS-

At 8:18AM on Monday, April 16, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 11254 S Zamora Av.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke billowing from a window on the 2nd floor of a two story, government housing unit.  An aggressive fire attack quickly located a contents fire in one room of the apartment and extinguished the fire in only nine minutes. Simultaneously, firefighters conducted a primary search for any possible victims and located an adult female, unconcious.  She was rapidly extracted and paramedics immediately began life saving medical interventions.  Unfortunately, she was determined beyond medical help and pronounced deceased on scene.

31 firefighters, under the expert leadership of Battalion Chief William Peralta, prevented the fire from extending throughout the unit and searched the building to ensure no other patients were in need of care.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section is actively investigating this incident in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department.  Smoke alarms were located inside the fire unit, however their functional status is not immediately known.

The County of Los Agneles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner will determine the official cause of death.
